Frequently Asked Questions

What is Solid Hardwood Flooring?

Solid Hardwood is a beautiful traditional choice for your interior space. Solid hardwood floors are made of planks milled from a single piece of timber. They are available in many species, sizes, styles and finishes. Solid hardwood flooring is one of the main types of product we carry.

Solid wood floors have a thick wear surface and can be sanded and finished more times than some engineered wood floors. It is not uncommon for homes in New England, Eastern Canada, and Europe which are several hundred years old to have the original solid wood floor still in use today. They are designed to last the life of the home.

Solid hardwood is hydroscopic and porous. Extreme humidity levels or moisture can cause solid hardwood to expand or contract. This may result in cupping, crowning, disfiguration and unsightly gaps to the floor. This can be especially pronounced in wider plank sizes.

Solid Hardwood is not recommended for basements or “below grade” floors, but can be absolutely stunning on a main floor or “above grade” levels. There have been recent innovations and new products introduced to the hardwood flooring industry, such as Engineered Hardwood or Vinyl products that can be substituted for solid hardwood in areas it is not recommended.

Come and visit our showroom and ask our knowledgeable sales agents which flooring type is right for your project.

What is Engineered Hardwood Flooring?

Engineered Hardwood is similar to Solid Hardwood, but it is constructed differently. Where solid hardwood is milled from a solid piece of lumber. Engineered hardwood is made by taking a veneer of real hardwood, and combining it with an engineered core, usually made from plywood or something similar. Engineered hardwood is both more versatile and stable. This alternating plywood core is extremely stable and less susceptible to moisture damage and disfiguration with expansion or contraction. This means less chance of unsightly gaps, buckling, cupping, and is an overall a stronger, longer lasting product. This strength allows engineered hardwood to often be sold in very wide plank sizes, a very popular trend in the design industry right now. This strength also allows engineered floors to be installed over areas with radiant heat. Making it a popular option for the discerning home owner.

Engineered Hardwood comes in dozens of dazzling colours and finishes, from handscraped to wide plank wirebrushed, and low and high gloss finishes. It also comes in virtually every species from Oak, Maple, Hickory and other exotic species.

Engineered can be installed virtually anywhere, including basements, which are usually prone to moisture issues, It is a good choice for homes, condominiums and commercial spaces, basements and radiant heated areas. GreenValley prides itself in being experts in engineered wood flooring as it is one of our main focuses. This experience can ensure you find the right floor for your project ideas.
